Best Music/gaming Audio setup?

I am currently using motherboard integrated sound and a £10 headset, im wondering what the difference would be for me to get a high end sound card/headset, im willing to spend probably £250-300 for the combo, i know nothing about this aspect of computers though however I am extremely into listening to music and these would also be doubling up as my gaming headset (though i don't really play fps games atm more like starcraft and bioshock etc)

Do you require a mic? Even if you do better SQ qould be audiophile grade stereo, wired cans, a sound card possibly with headphone amp section and a seperate mic like Modmic?
