What should one look for when in the market for an optical cable?
And yes,I'm guilty,I do have several "Monster" cables in my home theatre
setup. But is there another brand or qualities I can look for so I don't have
to sacrafice my other arm & leg?
Thanx!

Digital is digital...if the light beam gets from one end to the other,
that's all the "quality" there is. The cheapest cable that does that is as
good as the most expensive one.

An optical cable isn't as "sensitive and complex" as a DVI or HDMI
cable, so a generic one will do.

There is a 10 foot Walmart special for only $9.82. It's a Playstation2
optical cable, but an optical cable is an optical cable and can be used
for a receiver, MD, CD/DVD, PS2 or any equipment that uses it.

Use the cheapest one with the best fit in your connectors. There is no
difference in performance, only the reliability of the connections. Use
coaxial connections if you can, because they are more reliable and there is
no significant difference in performance.

Look for one that carries the signal from one end all the way to the
other. <g>

Seriously, I've never seen an optical cable that didn't work perfectly.
The only thing I might suggest is that you get one that has a fairly
thick outer layer - to prevent kinking, which is about the only thing
that can go wrong. Good strain relief at the connectors is also a good
idea.

Don't worry about the brand - it doesn't make any difference. You
should be able to get a good one for $10 to $20, and even at that price
the manufacturer and reseller are making a bundle.

Walmart has several in their "Playstation / XBox" department for under $10.

If you want to get fancier, they have a Philips brand one in their audio
department for under $20.

Any of these will work fine, and spending more than this will not
accomplish anything other than draining your bank account.

Agreed!

I purchased one on Ebay for $0.99 (+ shipping), and of course it works great.
The cheapest I found in stores was $15.

Also after finding that the cheapest DVI cable I could find in the stores here
was $50, I purchased one from Ebay for $1.50.

I laughed at the idiots at Radio Shack, Best Buy and Sears who tried to tell me
I had to buy the $100 Monster cable to get the best quality.

Bullshit.

As curmudgeon said, digital is digital. All it has to do is pass one's and
zero's from one end of the cable to the other.

i go to my local friendly electronics parts store and buy them for
about $6. most large cities have them and many smaller towns in
technically alive areas. if the store is closed (sundays) i can get
them at radio shack for about double the price.

Whichever is the cheapest. This is a digital signal. Either it works
or it doesn't.

If your box can do coax instead of optical, you'll save a bundle.

Not sure which cable you are buying, but David posted this link.... a
3' cable for $4.97 at radio shack, is as good as any.
