Hi...I've got a broken 703. When I place a disc (LD or CD), it doesn't spin
but the lens does attempt to focus. After a few seconds of that is stops and
all I get is a "no disc" message.

Now I've trying to do some research on my own by scouring the newsgroups and
I've learned that the lens must "see" the disc before it attempt to spin, so
I fear it may be a bad laser unit. Am I right? Is there something I can do
to verify that one way or the other. Also, approx. how much would this kind
of repair (or replacement) cost? Would it be worth sending it out for
repair? Thanks.

Normally if you get "no disc" with both CD's and LD's the pickup is bad.
The pickup by itself costs a little over $200 new. The other source is
working used pickups. I do have some of these also. There is also labor to
align the replacement pickup so it will cost some money to do this. What is
happening is that the focus circuitry cannot focus on the CD/LD so it's
sending the message "no disc".

I can help you if you want to fix it, it is cheaper to buy a used working
703 than putting in a new pickup. You need to decide how much you like this
particular unit. You could about buy a 704 for the same price as replacing
with a new pickup.

Thank you for a response, Kurtis. If you don't mind, could you tell me how
much a used pickup would cost to purchase and install?

It looks like you snagged a D703 in good condition with remote & manual for
under $200 delivered.

A man of action. Nice job.

LOL! Nothing goes un-noticed here, huh? Now all I have to do is hide it from
my better half. :)

If you were looking to repair an LD-V4200, then subsequently bought one, the
purchase would have escaped my attention.
