We were thinking about buying a new sory 36" FD Trintron and using it for
dvd's and plug it in to the cable connection ( house wired when built) we
have cable service and roadrunner in the house, and we're giving twc $100 a
month. So the sales person shows me hdtv and it looks great So my question
is what would the picture be like just using the systems tuner. We have and
older sony there now and it works great.

The TV tuner will work fine. I have never been impressed with time warner
set top boxes anyway. I do receive several HD channels for local broadcasts
across the cable for my setup. I am contemplating getting the cablecard for
my TV to get additional HD channels and other things.

Is the older Sony even HD capable? If it's not, then you're not going
to see
any HD. And even if it is, it's unlikely it has a QAM tuner
which would be required for it to receive any unencoded HD channels
without
a cable box.

What will be key to using a settop is how you connect it into the TV. At a
minimum, use component cables (3 separate plugs just for video). If the
Sony has DVI or HDMI (and if the box does also), then go with that.

If you go with s-video, you'll loose a lot of quality. If you go through
coax, then forget it.

the hd for dvd's however if i get an hdtv and put it on my cable would the
picture be as good as a regular tv (non HD) <trader4@optonline.net> wrote in

I also have a two year old Sony that is HDTV Ready and is connected directly
to cable without a box. Is it possible to get HDTV from the cable company
without requiring their box?

I ask this because I would like to retain all the features that are built
into the Sony and avoid a box if possible.

Thanks,

Bob

"HDTV ready" means that the set can display HDTV but does not have its own
digital tuner. So you would have to use a cable box or external digital
tuner to get digital channels, including HDTV channels.
