Camera not reading memory card

Hello,
We have a canon A480 camera that wont read the memory card. Says (no memory card) when turned on. Also it wont read any pictures on card. There are pictures on the card as we can see them on the computer. Any help wood be grateful.

Hello,
I removed the batteries and left them out longer then my previous attempt. When I installed the batteries it wasorking fine??? So far so good.

Have you tried it on a computer or laptop via a card Reader?

I am unfamiliar to "formatting", but will look it up...
