Cameras Shutting Down

Hello,
I've had a Samsung S730 for a few years. Recently, it will only take one pic, then shut down. Batteries are fresh. If I pop the battery compartment open and closed, it will take another pic, then shut down again.
I just bought my daughter a Vivitar ViviCam 5018 for Christmas. Took the memory card from the Samsung and put it in the Vivitar. She was able to take about 10 pics with the Vivitar, but now the same thing is happening to her. Do I have a bad memory card, or am I just unlucky with cameras?
Memory card is a SanDisk 512mb, and is empty, or nearly so.

Well, the common factor btween the two cameras would seem to be the memory card. They don't last forever and are now pretty cheap to buy -- don't buy one too large (over 2gig ?) or it may not work in an older camera. Frankly, I'd take the cameras with you and ask the dealer to fit the new card and see what happens.
