Can I connect soundbar to digital optical on Infinity cable box instead of to TV

WE need to enhance the sound on our Sony TV, especially clearer voices on TV programs and movies. Our TV is wall mounted and we cannot get to the digital optical on its back. It does not have HDMI ARC. Can I connect a 3.1 soundbar to the digital optical on the back of our Infinity cable box? If that works, will the vocals be clearer?

It will function. The one issue I had with a similar setup was that the LCD TV did "stuff" (some kind of processing) that delayed the video microseconds. That meant the sound and picture weren't synchronized. You have nothing to lose in trying it.
