Can I get my USB keyboard to work for the boot-up HDD Password field?

I keep my laptop lid closed 100% of the time and use USB keyboard/mouse and external monitors.
I recently set an HDD-Password for my system, which prompts me every time I restart the machine...but when I get the prompt (see image below), I can't use my USB keyboard: the keystrokes don't register at all so I have to open the lid and use that keyboard, which is annoying.

Can I change some setting so that I can use my USB keyboard to type the password in? My understanding is that the HDD password only makes the HDD contents uanavailable (until the password is entered), so I don't see why it would be impossible to at least just have my USB devices recognized...

there may be an option in your BIOS that is called along the lines of "legacy USB devices" that may not be enabled. but since this is a prompt from the BIOS it may not be possible
