My Philips HTS is dying as far as reading a DVD. It sometimes does, sometimes doesn't at the same time only the play button works on the remote so can never select options. I like the sound sytem though.
I bought a stand alone DVD (LG like the TV) HDMI. I now have both the DVD and the HTS connected to my 42" smart TV.

Will I be able to play the DVD on the player and hear the sound back through the HTS?

Thanx all!

if your TV has an audio out feature you could connect that to the stereo system input, however, most TVs don't have audio out.

Most likely you will just need to run HDMI which includes sound to the receiver (if it can accept HDMI) and then use HDMI pass through to the TV. The sound will stay at the receiver and the picture will go to the TV. Again, that is if the receiver supports it.

Alternatively, you can use rca cables for left and right audio out from the DVD player to the receiver and then have HDMI, S-Video, Composite, or Component cables from the DVD player to the TV for picture.

It really just depends on your setup. If you give specific makes/models it is easier to assist. Some home theater in a box setups don't really work like that since they are low-end solutions that aren't intended to be used as separates and have very basic inputs and outputs.
