Canon powershot USB connection

USB connection to Canon PowerShot SX230 stopped working. Computer does not recognize that a connection has been made, photo management program can't find the camera.
Have tried a different USB port - no difference.

Sorry, should have noted that I am running Linux - Ubuntu 12. 04. Windows info not useful.
After installing another photo management program (gphoto), the computer now mounts the camera from the USB port, but my photo management program of choice, DigiKam, still will not import from the camera any more. Am trying DigiKam forums.

In case anyone is listening, everything is now working. One needs to mount (with gphoto), then unmount the camera, then DK, an otherwise wonderful free software program, by the way, will download.
