Confused on streaming movies from HD to TV

So I have movies on my HD (external) and I'm confused as to how it's possible to hook up my HD to my new TV (http/www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN55H6203-55-Inch-1080p-120Hz/dp/B00K4UJ318). Is it just plug and play? Most movies are in .mkv format

Edit: I have a laptop too but it has no HDMI input and I read that USB to HDMI cause some quality loss which is not desirable

I doubt your TV will do .mkv plug and play, but honestly, the quickest way to find out is to try.

Amazon support may well be able to answer that too, if it's fulfilled by amazon.
