Connect 5.1 HTIB to PC?

This is the HTIB im thinking of getting:

aka the Pioneer HTP-073
My mobo is a gigabyte z97x sli, and it has onboard 7.1 sound.
My question, how would i connect these to get 5.1 sound from my pc through the speakers?
Do i just connect a HDMI from my mobo to my receiver?

Yes you can connect an HDMI cable or optical toslink cable (if motherboard has that port).

If doing HDMI you will have to go into realtek audio manager (or whatever your PC has) and set it to output sound to HDMI

FYI, pioneer is pretty good for home theater in a box setup. Onkyo used to be good but has not figured out how to fix their unreliable digital input boards.

Pioneer is not premium end by any stretch or even higher end, but they have a consistent reliable quality level and their models are competitive. This makes them my #2 choice after Yamaha.

Its a bit cheaper, and the only yamaha product ive ever used was my dads old bike, so i wasnt sure if it was good. Do you think its worth it?

The Yamaha at least has optical input and the pioneer does not.
For basic needs either one would be fine, but the Yamaha seems better.

Now how big of a room/space is this for?
Both units are using passive subs (passive means powered from the receiver, active means separate amplifier and gets a RCA cable signal from receiver).
If you have a large room with vaulted ceilings this will likely be underperforming, unfortunately both receivers lack the ability to directly output to a active sub.

It will cost more but for more long term I would look at a Yamaha rx-377 and a set of speakers/subwoofer.

I have the exact HTIB in question. The amp is very good, the speakers however are pretty crap. Not horrible for movies, but not real good for music. But you get what you pay for i guess. I found it for AU$200 brand new, and just added good front and centre speakers. so the price your paying i probably would look at something else with at least 2 way speakers. Yes HDMI is the only real option to connect that will work properly.
