Solved! Connecting PC to TV via HDMI

I've put this under the laptop section as was unsure where to post.

I have an Acer Aspire X XC-605 which I have tried to connect to my Samsung UE48JU6400 TV via HDMI. I have today discovered that the HDMI runs from the motherboard. I have no separate graphics card.

I can get a picture on the TV when the desktop is also plugged in to the monitor at the same time. I can also continue using the TV as a monitor if I disconnect the normal monitor whilst the pc is still running.

If I then try and restart the pc whilst just connected to the TV I get the black screen again.

I have tried adjusting the various resolutions to no avail.

I'm wondering if i need a stand alone graphics card with a hdmi socket but don't want to spend out if that won't solve the problem.

I just want to leave the pc tower connected to the TV and get rid of the monitor I had.

The TV shows as screen 1 at 1360 x 768

If I click on screen 2 which is the monitor it says 1366 x 768 (recommended)

The monitor is connected to the tower by vga. There's only one HDMI port

What I would try next to making sure the Samsung TV is set as the Main Display in Windows' Display Settings. Then shut down your system, disconnect the monitor, and then try booting your system with just the Samsung TV connected.

Screen 1 is the TV and set up as main display. Just tried shutting down and disconnecting the monitor. Still a black screen

If you go into Windows' Display Settings (with both displays attached), what other resolutions are available for your Samsung TV (screen 1)? If 3840x2160 is available, what happens to screen 2 if you select that resolution for screen 1?

I can change the TV (screen 1) to 3840 x 2160. Nothing happens to screen 2. Should I have it as duplicate screen or extended?

It should be extended. I suspected that your on-board graphics was trying to default to a resolution (3840x2160) that it could not support when you only had the TV connected as a display, but the fact that you can see it handles that resolution when the other display is connected botches that idea. Unfortunately, I'm out of ideas here.

Do you think buying a graphics card would make any difference?

Hard to say as I don't have any experience with 4K TVs or displays.

I am having the exactly same problem as you. I also have a AXC-605-EB31 SFF PC and am trying to connect it to my Hisense 4k TV via HDMI and I am getting a black screen on the TV. It only works when I connect a regular computer monitor at the same time. I have tired many ways but the issue is still present.
