Copy from dvr to dvr

Have a DirecTV DVR that is a few years old and seems to be having problems, anyway the technician from DirecTV is coming out Sunday and I'm afraid he will replace it with a new one and take all of my recorded programs with him, as I was told there is no way?? to transfer these to a new DVR. I think that you own that DVR so if you replace it with a new one you may be able to connect it as a playback only unit. Ask the tech if that would work.

Well actually I don't own the DVR as it's the property of DirecTV, and it turned out that the technician did have to replace the DVR with a new one, and I did end up losing everything I had recorded on it. I am not a technical person, but I do find it unbelievable that there is no easy way to copy from one to another, after all that's the reason to have a DVR in the first place; to be able to record and, if desired, save what you have recorded for later viewing.
