I have an HP Probook 6570b.

Socket is 988B rPGA.
My current CPU is i5-3210M.

I read this thread, and it got me thinking if I can also upgrade my Laptop CPU to i7 Quad.
CPU upgrade question Probook 6570b

If I had an QM77 Chipset, like he had, I would have tried it without question.
But I have an HM76 Chipset.

And i don't know what differences these two Chipsets have.

So, can I upgrade to an i7 Quad, like an i7-3840QM?

I have exactly same HP Probook 6570b with HM76 Chipset.
I just upgraded CPU to i7 3720qm and it started without problems and doesn't heat up too much either - only around 90-92 degrees Celsius under full stress.
All 4 cores and 8 threads are recognised.
I didn't even update BIOS, its F.62 version from 2015.

Works just fine!

The i7 3720QM was not in question, because it´s on the official HP spare parts list other than the i7-3840QM 😉

Maybe aurumnus got the 3840QM to work nontheless.

Actually, its on the official list as only working with EliteBook 8570p and not with probook in question. So it's still 4 core cpu within probook that officilly should not support it.
And there is very little difference between 3720qm and 3840qm.

Ah, didnt´see that.
The difference is the microcode in the BIOS, the chipsets in question would all support it, if the CPU microcode is programmed into the BIOS.
