Sorry I'm extremely new to HDR

I've been looking at TV's online.

Do all HDMI connected devices leading to an HDR capable TV have to be capable of HDR themselves. OR.. is it done TV-Side?

EDIT:Additional info:
I'm looking at an hdmi extractor which takes the 7.1 signal from the HDMI and sends them through RCA connection to an older receiver(and does HDMI PASS THROUGH To the display). ( the one I Got only does 4k 30Hz according the manual)

I've also been looking at an HDMI splitter.

I Fear I'm wasting effort with things that won't support the newer technology and abilities. HDR, 4k 60Hz etc.. I have little understanding of HDMI versions HDCP versions etc..

I just would want to be able to use my older receiver with an hdmi-7.1-extractor and be able to use the newer abilities with HDR.

Solution
To view HDR material you need an HDR source (BD player or 4k HDR streamer).
It has to connect to a TV with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 (some only have one HDMI input that works). A 18gbs HDMI cable is a good idea so the cable doesn't limit data throughput. The description "fast" is not enough.
I would suggest the easiest way to get audio to the receiver is to use the optical audio output of the TV. You won't get lossless audio such as Dolby TrueHD this way but it will work fine. Make sure your TV will output in surround sound. Some BD players have two HDMI outputs so you can run the video directly to the display and the audio directly to the receiver.
You are better off buying a new receiver that handles it all to be honest. Splitters that are 4K HDR HDCP 2.2 compatible are fare and few and expensive, if they exist yet. didn't last time I checked. Then the extractor as well has to be HDCP 2.2 compliant as well, or any copy-written 4K HDR content wouldn't play. As well as the extractor then has to be capable of decoding all the surround formats, AC3, Dolby, dolby digital+, DTS, DTS+HD, DTS HD-MA, Dolby Atmos which is the new standard, etc. If it can't decode that, than it would probably fall back to 2.0 or something.

What extractor were you looking at?

Thanks for your reply getochkn

I Bought this recently, the Extractor.

HDMI Digital Audio Converter Decoder Support 3 Modes for Audio Output Blue-Ray Player LPCM 4k Video ,7.1 Digital Audio Decorder

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019RF7ZVA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm debating returning it(if that's even possible Haven't asked yet) I Had trouble running it to my other (older) monitor with blu-ray content. and I Couldn't get it to work with my newer monitor hdmi input It only worked with the newer monitor if i put a splitter after it ( It just suddenly started working)

I might just return it, in the manual it says it only does 4K / 30 Hz, I'm kind of hoping if I do my theater setup with the older receiver I Can do it with the newer technology ( all out 4K 60Hz HDR etc.. ).. It's becoming stressful thinking about the versions of everything and not being That knowledgeable of these things. It's not as simple as I Thought it would be. 🙁

As simple as I've had it in my head is, I want to run movies from the computer to the extractor to use with my older receiver then PASS through alll the video to my future TV.

Sometimes I wonder if getting an older receiver with 7.1 in and out(pre-outs) was a mistake too. Maybe I should of just got a receiver with new hdmi input and pre-outs.........

I need to stop before I Just have a bunch of paper weights and door stoppers. haa..

oh and about the splitter, I actually found an HDR capable one which isn't out yet by some company called Muxlab

so, getochkn
- what do you think I should do, return the extractor(why?), Do my future setup differently(how?)..

Oh another thing, I kind of wanted to have the pre-outs so I Can do like a MONOLITH amp or OUTLAW. Future setup vision lol

Well streaming from a PC, there isn't really any 4K HDCP 2.2 compliant streaming available yet except for 4K netflix and that's only with a Kaby Lake CPU. Is everything goind HDR? Yes it seems so. Now if you wanted to get a new bluray player with HDR,m and possibly use your PC one day, and maybe a console, than a new receiver with multiple HDMI 2.0 HDCP 2.2 HDR compliant inputs and outputs is the best way to go.

That device says is does LPCM audio, but what about all the surround formats? Doesn't look like it decodes Dolby or DTS-Master audio or things like that. Not sure though.

Thanks I've decided to return the extractor.
I'll be thinking of other ways, and ways you've said to do things.

Good luck getochkn.

ya i don't know what the extractor costs you, but the splitter was $150. as i said hooking up muiltiple devices, then you'd need a hdmi 2.0 HDCP 2.2 HDR compliant matrix or switch box, and that'd cost $$$, and by the time you got all these make shift stuff, you could have bought a proper AVR. Denon makes some nice ones, Onkyo as well. I have 4 Denon's in my house so I'm partial. lol.
