DVD player not working

Have an older Panasonic TV with cable. Attempted to hook up a new Sony DVD player to TV. Obtained the adapter for Coaxial cable. turn on DVD no picture or sound...

If your new DVD has HDMI only then you will need an HDMI converter not just a cable.
