External mic not recognized on laptop

So today i just got an external mic for my laptop to record some things for a project, but when i connected the mic to the splitter jack, it doesn't recognize the mic at all, but it does however recognize the headphones, i've tried looking through all the forums, but the answers i have seen are that the mic jack for laptops are broken, and that i had to get a USB mic, is this true? Because i'm working on a very limited budget, and i can't buy a usb mic, how do i solve this issue?

My laptop is running windows 8.1, i've already checked the Realtek HD Audio settings and the driver settings, but it still doesn't recognize the mic, please help-
