You can try out Pandora FMS to monitor your internal network. It's a free and opensource tool.

Just use snort, I lot of security and networking enthusiast use it because of its community and customization. If you are on a network with a real server you can install a vm and use something like a security onion to set up multiple sensors, this works like an IDS and it is free.
