HDMI output to input or USB dongle

I have a laptop with a 4K display that I want to use as a display for my Xbox one. It doesn't have an HDMI input. He does have an HDMI output. I tried connecting it to the HDMI output for shits and giggles but no dice. The general consensus is that you can't convert a HDMI output to an HDMI input however they do have adapters that are sold for that. However even if I converted the HDMI output to HDMI input I don't think that would work. They also have cables that are USB dongle that just plug into USB port and have a female HDMI input, I believe that could work but on the PCs hardware I think the HDMI adapter is placed on the video card so I'm not really sure how USB would get that kind of video input in. And even further even if I could get this to work I really doubt they would support the 4K resolution. It just sucks because I have a pretty big 4K monitor to use and an Xbox one S that supports 4K, but I can't really use it. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

There's bound to be some converter, but then you are hitting port bandwidth with USB3 and such. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA19P3SC5259&cm_re=hdmi_capture_card-_-15-158-332-_-Product for instance says unencrypted, so no HDCP compliance there. Bluerays will not play in HD Don't know if the games will either. Not that many laptops have expresscard anymore either.

Seeing some people use video capture and some stream to a laptop. that might be an option, probably need a wired ethernet for the bandwidth, use the xbox app in windows 10, but it is 1080p

The xbox one S and the ps4 pro do not render at 4k, they still render at 720/1080 and upscale the output to 4k, much like your blue ray upscaling 480 dvd to 1080.

I have an Alienware 17 with hdmi out and a Fn F9 switches it to an input, your laptop may or may not have a similar function as it would have to be designed to do this. Have to ask the manufacturer.

On my alienware the hdmi port is labeled out/in, and the F9 key has HDMI in, to make the output an input I hit FN key and F9, then I can have my xbox 360 connected to my laptop with hdmi. It makes the LCD a monitor. and the hardware has to be there to do that.

Yeah the specifications just say it's an HDMI output I can't believe such a high and laptop can be limited just buy a port. Am I really SOL? There is absolutely no cable I could buy to go from Xbox one into the computer you figure there would be an adapter. I have seen ones that turn HDMI out into HDMI in but I wonder if these would work

I'm not sure what you are struggling with here, but it has to be specifically built to allow a second pathway into the screen, if it is an out only then that's it, it's just a path from the GPU to the port, no connection to the monitor. Just because it is 'high end' doesn't mean that it should have this feature, the alienware mentioned above is the first i've ever heard of. It's quite a lot of hardware for a feature that most will not use.

I also have an Alienware 17 r3 as well, do you know if the display port can be used with a Black Magic UltraStudio Mini Recorder to attach a camcorder to the laptop

1. Start your own thread, this is old enough that people may not be seeing that it's been commented on.
2. Read this thread, it is highly unlikely (I've never seen one) that your hdmi output can be turned into an input.
