hdmi to av receiver

hi guys i know this is an old recurring question but i need to find a solution hopefully.
I have connected from my nvidia card hdmi port to an open port on my receiver.
Then from receiver output to tv input.
In my nvidia control panel it shows that eveything is connected and working.
BUT the only way i can get sound with the configuration is by using my optical cable from the amp to the tv..
If i connect my nvidia card direct to my tv i get sound through the tv no problem.
I just cant seem to get sound when i connect to my 5.1 reciever via hdmi..
I have tried every other suggestion. Can someone shed light on this issue. thankyou

Check the input set up menu of the receiver.
It may be set to receive audio from one of the digital connections for that HDMI input rather than HDMI itself.
