hdmi-vga display blackout

HP Laptop with HDMI only. I needed to connect to VGA through a sound/system to show videos on screen. Bought HDMI to VGA converter cable. When I play the video, the projected image gradually blacks out from bottom to top. Then the image might return for a second or two and it will happen again.

It is possible that the adapter cord you purchased is flawed.
