HDMI vs SPDIF (optical) cable

Hello,
I am hooking up my hdtv to a home theater system. My Tv and home theater system both have HDMI and SPDIF (optical audio) capabilities. Which cable provides the best sound quality?

They are both digital. The sound should be exactly the same.
