Hi everyone,

Recently snapped probably the 10th headset of my life (bit between earcup and headband).

Growing REALLY tired of flimsy plastic units, lasting on average a few weeks/months before ultimately caving to the massive force of me pulling on one cup a little when taking it off or putting it on...

Burned through the following brands so far: Creative (5 times), Turtle Beach, Tritton, Corsair and most recently Steelseries (probably the worst build quality of all, CERTAINLY the worst mic).

Can you please suggest a headset, which will serve well in gaming scenarios as a priority (surround would be cool, I have 5.1 plugs too if needed in my soundcard)

Build quality is key! No plastic, preferably metal or a construction which isn't susceptible to snapping easily.

I don't need a mic (detchable would be good), as I use a Behringer C1 unit.

Thank you all!

Edit: well that took all of 30 seconds to vanish into oblivion...bump

Up to £250/$390/€350

Having said that...the Kingston HyperX Cloud II looks like a great deal, with a metal frame and flexible headband, detachable mic and apparently great sound in games...

So this is not about money, it is about the fit

Wild! My research has lead me to the 990DT Pro version...

If you had to pick one of the above, for overall sound quality in games (FPS mainly) and really god build quality which will last longer than the headphone drivers will...

Which would you pick?

It would seem so. Reviews tell me the sound quality is very high indeed for the price range.

Just wondering what I will need to extract the best from the headphones. Any ideas if I need a DAC or will an internal sound card to fine, for a non audiophile?

^ It's likely you won't need an external DAC since your onboard should be fine, however depending on the headphone you decide to buy an amp could be beneficial or necessary. Generally with higher impedance headphones (think 100Ω and above) you would need an amp to bring out the best of the headphones and drive them to comfortable listening levels.

Can you suggest an amp to power Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro Headphones?

I am not an Audiophile, however I want to drive the equipment to a just level and make sure it works properly.

Anything up to 50-60 Sterling? Or is more needed?

In that range I would look at the Fiio E10k which is an amp+DAC and will work fine for powering the DT 990 Pros for £61.90 on amazon uk.

Explanation from user Head Injury at head-fi:

" Beyerdynamic lists the DT990 Pro as having a sensitivity of 96 dB/mW. So we want to figure out how much power we need for 14 more decibels. It just so happen that if you divide the change in decibels by 10, then do 10 to that power, you get the change in power. In this case that's 10 ^ ( 14 / 10 ), or just about 25. So now we know we need an output of 25 mW for 110 dB with the DT990.

Now, how powerful is the E10K? This will depend on the headphone's impedance and the amp's voltage output. Sometimes the amp's spec page will publish the max power output at various impedances, in which case you can just use that. The E10K only tells us the power at 32 ohms which isn't much help, because the DT990 has an impedance of 250 ohms. But it does tell us the max Vp-p (peak-to-peak voltage) of 7.39 Vp-p, which we can use. First, though, we need to find the Vrms (root mean square voltage), which is more useful for audio. It's easier than it sounds; for a sine wave like our audio signal, you halve Vp-p to get the amplitude, then divide that by the square root of 2. In this case that's ( 7.39 / 2 ) / sqrt(2). The E10K is capable of up to 2.6 Vrms in a best case scenario.

What's that mean for power? Converting to power is pretty easy too, you just square your Vrms and divide by the headphone's impedance, which gives you a value in full Watts. Then multiply by 1000 to get that same value in mW. Then the E10K should ideally be capable of ( 2.6 ^ 2 ) / 250 * 1000 = 27 mW at 250 ohms."

the dt990pro-250 definitely needs an amplifier. some onboard audio can power them but to get decent sound out of them you will want an amp.

the schiit magni is the best choice as it offers high power for a reasonable cost. the fiio e10k i would say is not quite as good but also would work.

be aware: the dt990 has a v-shaped profile tuned more for bass and treble. for open cans it has pretty decent bass output and also very articulate, sharp treble (some may find it a little bright or harsh) but it also is very detailed. nice good soundstage and comfort. whether you like them or not depends on if you like a v-shaped sound profile and like detailed cans (some people find detailed cans fatiguing so prefer smoother sounding less detailed cans).

the dt990 pro is almost the same as the dt990 premium. the only differences are a slight design change, less bass in the premium version with a bit more airy sound and less clamp force on the premium. and the that they are available in 32/250/600 versions. generally not worth the price (unless going for the 600 version but you do not need that)

i've posted extensively on the subject here so you might want to do a forum search for threads i've commented in (forum search for "ssddx headphone headset" or google search for "tomshardware ssddx headphone headset")
