Help with headset on a laptop with one audio jack

I have an asus laptop it only has one audio jack for both the microphone and headphones, I have a headset with 2 plugs, I tried plugging in the microphone cord but all the sound goes away and the mic doesn't work. On my previous laptop with two jacks the mic worked perfectly. Please help me solve this problem.
p.s It is a windows 8 laptop
