I'm experiencing issues hooking up Samsung smart tv to older (non-hdmi) Onkyo receiver. I can get sound to speakers via optical cable from TV to Receiver...however I can't get the subwoofer to do anything. Really in need of help, would like to keep this receiver and make it all work. Models listed below:

Onkyo Receiver: TX-DS595
Samsung Television: UN60J620D
Polk Subwoofer: PSW10 (110v)

Solution
Is the sub working on other sources. Have you run the set up on the receiver so it knows it has a sub hooked up. If you haven't then the sub won't work in anything. This will also tell you if there is a problem with the sub itself.
Check the TV audio menu and try changing the output type.
Try different surround modes. Usually for TV you would set it to Dolby rather than Auto.
