How can i set a higher resolution than my monitor resolution?

My monitor just allow resolution of 1280x1024 and seems vd just get the resolution of my monitor, there is a way to get higher resolutions? I opened amd catalyst and seems allow creating new resolutions but warns heavily that can be dangerous. When i use extended mode in htc vive i see the device allow very high resolution but dont know how that can be achieved to run games with that resolution

I do not think you can set a resolution higher than the maximum your monitor supports. Its really that you have 1280 x 1024 pixels/display elements that can take on different colors from the available chromaticity chart. It is not physically possible for the hardware to do more than that.
