How do I connect Dell laptop to a philips DVD/home theatre using hdmi cable?

I have connected my laptop to dvd/hometheatre via hdmi cable but its showing me a message that " the usb device is incompatible".Can any one tell me a solution for this?

Are you trying to play media on the laptop and hear it on the Phillips or are you trying to play DVDs on the Phillips and watch on the laptop?
