How do I plug in a headset?

OK this is a serious question. I have a headset with headphones and a microphone but only one cable. When I plug it into my laptop it works fine because its in a combo jack but I'm building a PC with dedicated separate ports. Will both audio in and out work if it is plugged into a microphone port or should I get a cable that turns them into a single port?
