how to connect to internet with a usb cable?

I notice the latest mobile computers like the Surface have USB sockets but no cat5 ethernet socket, which is what is needed to connect from our ISP's cable modem. Is the only way to use WIFI to get the internet signal to a 2 piece lap top like the Surface?

Yep, wi-fi is the only option. My wife's new Toshiba is the same way. I suppose you could use a USB ethernet adapter, like this one:

But doing so defeats the portability of these lightweight devices.

if you really want to sit down and plug in then thay make such things as well pretty cheap achtally, used to have one for a very old ibm

My Asus Transformer is just like that. WiFi only, unless you want to cripple iit with a wire.
Great little travel device, but, just like a Surface..it has its limitations.
