Having your Android device in landscape mode is useful in a number of situations. If you use your device for navigation, watching movies or playing games, landscape is the only way to go. Fortunately, there are two ways in enabling both the home screen and apps to utilize it. Here’s how to use the home screen in landscape mode in Android Marshmallow.

Enable landscape mode for the home screen
At the time of writing (April 2016), Google have released a small update that enables the Google Now Launcher for all updated Android phones. If you haven’t installed a third-party launcher and you keep your phone up to date, it is likely that you’re already using it. If so, you can enable auto-rotate of the home screen.

1. Tap and hold on an empty space on your home screen.
2. Select Settings and enable Auto rotation.
3. Return to the home screen and move your device into landscape, the home screen should rotate and scale to match.

If you don’t have the latest update or use a third-party launcher such as Nova Launcher, you can still enable the home screen in landscape mode.

1. Open Nova Launcher and select Nova Settings.
2. Select Screen Orientation and select either Auto Rotate or Force Landscape.

If your device is rooted, you too can enable the home screen in landscape mode.
1. Open your root-enabled file browser of choice with your device connected.
2. Select edit to open the build.prop file.
3. Add these two lines, ‘log.tag.launcher_force_rotate=VERBOSE’ and ‘lockscreen.rot_override=true’.
4. Save and reboot your Android device.

Home screen rotation should now shift and scale in the same way the Google Now Launcher does.
