I have the Hp Pavilion dv7 3165 dx with 4 GB and a 500 GB 7200. I was wondering if I can upgrade to 8 GB? I am not very computer savy, but not a total idiot either. Thank you for your time.

I think you can upgrade it, but I highly doubt you'll notice a performance difference over 4GB. 8GB isn't actually useful for much other than future proofing or things you don't do on a laptop (like heavy video editing or CAD work).

I wonder if I can upgrade from 500 GB to 640GB? Would that make it a little faster? I actually am looking at getting a laptop with a smaller screen than 17", as this one is too bulky to carry around. I do not want to spend a bundle. I just need to be able to go to my online live seminars for school without it being interupted by a slow computer. Any suggestions?
Thanks again. Shantel

A 500GB to 640GB would probably have no improvement on performance. If you're thinking of switching laptops, don't bother with any upgrades. Wait for Sandy Bridge to get wide re-release and buy a new i5-2XXX laptop and upgrade it yourself to a Solid State Drive.

[strike]You might see an improvement switching from a 5400rpm HDD to a 7200rpm HDD.
They make those in 2.5" laptop sized HDDs.[/strike]

Just noticed you were already using a 7200rpm HDD.

I would say around $500. Like I said I only need to be able to do my homework and access my live seminars for school. Thank you for the help.
