My laptop runs fine when on AC adaptor but when on battery, I get shutdown after several minutes. When re-started, there is a message that the shutdown was due to high cpu temperature and that the system in now normal. Even if re-started on the adaptor only a few seconds later.

Any ideas on the issue or how to fix?

Solution
Test ended, no results that where useful, it might just be your laptop.
A lot of other people have similar problems, but invenstigations on those should help you on your "journey" to the solution.

Test:
Ran Minecraft, Benchmarking, Virus scan, unplugged and in high performance mode, never topped 70 degress celsius.

Sorry.
well clean the exhaust on your laptop. and i would suggest goto a laptop tech to have your heatsink cleaned then reapply the thermal paste

How old is your laptop?
Bcus it could be the dust as Qazzi said.
Does the fan run?
Does you laptop run in "High Performance" mode when you remove the power supply?

Yes, fan works. Yes cleaned exhaust area.
I've tried forcing Cpu to run slower with the power profile. No effect.

PC is a 3 yr old 17 inch HP Pavillion Dv7 with i7 processor.

I'm willing to go into the box but don't have any heat sink adhesive. Still pondering why only overheats on battery. Do CPUs generally run warmer when on battery?

Im going to do some testing with this for 30 minutes on my mid end laptop, and benchmark in the main time 😀 Lets hope i get some good results.

Edit: Worst case scenario test
