I have a jvc tv and a sony rxd10av speakers connected via optical cable yet no sound is coming from the speakers, can someone

Its an old stereo system which makes it hard to find the setup for the optical cable and i have no way to get it running.

The optical port on the Sony is an OUTPUT port from the CD player, not an input port according to the manual I found -- https/www.manualowl.com/m/Sony/MHC-RXD10AV/Manual/67683
