I just got this laptop and installed windows without any bloatware. In every game I get 120 fps but with periodic dips to 40-50 range. Is my laptop defective? Have I done something wrong?

Without knowing the details, such as game name and settings level, I'll focus on general laptop tips. Make sure Windows' power profile isn't in some battery preserving mode. Set it for maximum performance. Game on AC power, not battery power. Use a program, like MSI Afterburner, to monitor temperatures of CPU and GPU while you game. You want to make sure the laptop isn't getting too hot.

Also, are you saying you get exactly 120fps on every game? Are you using some form of vsync?

I get frame dips in overwatch rainbow 6 siege and Destiny 2. I am not using vsync and have checked the power settings tenfold. I just have random fps drops while gaming, the 120 fps was an estimate but its usually around that point and it drops down to 40. Will the temperature make these spikes occur? If so how can I stop them.
