I have an Acer Extensa 5620z laptop. I want to replace the CD/DVD-ROM Optical Bay with a sata hdd ssd hard drive caddy for laptop adapter, so that I can install a solid state drive.

Can you tell me or suggest one that is compatible with my laptop?
The outside dvd slot on my laptop is 13.5 mm high, but the ejected caddy and it's 10mm high.

I am enclosing a couple of links to that you can have a good idea of what looking to get.

Okay, guess I should have said the item title (or whatever it's called) looks like what is needed, but the connector in the photo (and...

I just measured the ejected drive and It's 10mm, but the bezel is 13.5 mm high.

I don't know if I should go with the outside bezel size.

Also, I looked at he Amazon link that you provided, and there was a comment by someone called Sinister that said "Did not work at all on my Acer Extensa laptop. There is a hidden switch on it, not mentioned in the instructions. Tried it, still no luck getting my laptop to see the drive."

What's the hidden switch?

Aside from that, the Amazon link that you provided looks like the correct adapter.

Hmmm. I have no idea what the switch is. On another matter, have you pulled the optical drive out of the laptop yet?

No, I haven't. I only measured the outside slot tray door and the thickness when ejected.

That laptop is so old, I think the interface inside the laptop is different (IDE vs. SATA?). Here is a caddy that supposedly fits the 5620Z.

The connector on the back of the caddy is different than the ones we've been looking at.

Wow. You saved me from making a big mistake. I thought that it was a sata, but I went into the bios and found out it's Ide. So the second link that you gave is the correct one.

Thank you so much for researching the issue and providing the correct solution for my computer.

Glad I could be of help. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the IDE interface will slow the SSDs performance significantly, right?

I believe you are correct again. I was hoping to extend the life of this old laptop, but with the IDE interface it may not be worth it. Also, I added the item from the second amazon link that you gave me and they are charging $22.15 US dollars. So again the price point is less doable and it looks like I may have to continue using the HD without the benefits of a shiny new fast SSD drive.

$10.74US, with free shipping from Hong Kong:

Well, that' was a pleasant surprise. I was also looking around too, and I think I found one too for a bit less. Can you take a look and let me know?

Also, what kind of performance do this this will be over an IDE hd?

The description looks right to me, but the photos show the wrong connector.
I have no clue as to performance that could be expected. I have also never owned an SSD.

EDIT: I may be using the wrong names for the connectors themselves (SATA vs. IDE), as I know very little about such things. But I believe the connector you need is the one I showed you in the second link I gave you. It is obviously different from the ones in your links.

You are correct. It's definitely not an IDE from the picture. I read the description and it mention sata, nothing about IDE.
This one looks like it though.

I have never owned a SSD drive either.

Okay, guess I should have said the item title (or whatever it's called) looks like what is needed, but the connector in the photo (and the description, now that I read it), both contradict the item title.

Yes, both of those links look like the correct one.

Yes, I will definitely do that. But I will have to do at a later time this week, as I was looking at the back of the computer and it looks like I will have to remove close to a dozen screws to get access to the dvd drive.

I'm heading off to bed now, but I will let you know how it goes.

If you don't feel like removing the panel that covers most of the guts, I can simplify things for you, as it is actually only one screw holding the optical drive in. First, hit the eject button on the DVD drive so it pops open. Shut down the laptop and remove the battery. Remove the single screw I have circled in red in this photo:

Then, gently but firmly pull the optical drive out of the laptop. It will take a bit of effort, as it is press-fit on the connector inside the laptop.

I unfortunately went ahead and took the computer apart.

I found out that the HD is indeed a sata drive, but the dvd is an IDE drive.

So, if i choose to replace the hd, I can just go ahead and use a SSD, but for the dvd bay, I would definitely need an adapter.

Thank you for all your help, it was greatly appreciated.

At least now I know exactly what is required and what my options are.
