I want to upgrade my cpu on my Satellite A665d-S6059 AMD Phenom II Quad-Core P920(1.6GHz)

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6059 with AMD Phenom II Quad-Core P920(1.6GHz) and want to upgrade to a newer AMD chip.

My motherboard took a dump so I placed an order for a new never used motherboard. Since I am gonna be swapping my old chip to new motherboard. I figure I replace the cpu for a newer/upgraded version. I mean, why not?? But I am yet to find anywhere what I can upgrade with..

AMD has the following Aseries CPUs for laptops
FX, A12, A10 but I don't know if they would fit my motherboard for my laptop. Motherboard # NWQAE LA-6192P -> K000108490

I am also gonna upgrade to SSD and 8gbs of ram. It already has a dedicated 1gb of video. Not sure if I can upgrade that.


Now the Why?
Well, a laptop similar to mine is going for over 900 and up with all the bells and whistles mine had, backlit keyboard,
Harmon speakers, quad core, dedicated video, etc..

Also, my laptop hardly has any wear on it.

The use:
I use it for Web design, photoshop, video editing, etc.. I need a chip that can handle this. So I think I would have to get at least an A10 or better.

Anywho, how can I make it work? What chip can fit in laptop?

My new motherboard comes next week. I took the laptop apart and I am ready to go. Let me know.

Actually you have this backwards ... the 970 would run hotter. The 940 is 25 watts but not appreciably faster than your current 920 (1.7 vrs 1.6).

The 970 is noticeably better at 2.2 but ... as i said it is 35 watts.

There are 2 even better but they both run at 45 watts. The X920 (2.3) and the X940 (2.4). I strongly doubt your cooling system could handle the extra heat they would generate and ... they are not that much faster than the 970 so why take the chance. I know of no way to improve a laptop's 'stock' cooling performance. The jump in heat from 25 watt to 45 watt I think would be too severe ... I think 35 watt should...

there are some better processors for that socket but ... here's the thing ... your current processor is 25 watt. The only processors noticeably better are at least 35 watt. Most folks would say don't do it because more watts = more heat. Having said that ... I do it all the time lol. What kind of temps were you getting with the old processor?

This cpu looks to be better suited to what you want to do (I don't think there is an A10, A12 or FX that fits that socket):

Phenom II N970 4 / 4 2.2 GHz 2 MB 35W

the next one up is 45 Watts so ... out of the question I believe.

Well according to cpu-world.com my socket can handle 25W-45w.

I like the the idea of the phenom II x4 970 and the 940. 940 runs hotter of course. Which of the 2 is faster?

Would I have to reconfigure my heatsink and fan to an upgraded one? Or what I have would hold up ok?

Thanks for the info. According to the socket I currently have. It can handle 25W to 45w.

According to specs on phenom II 920 x4 it runs at 25w
