if I accidentally format my memory card does it delete all the images? is there any way to get them back?

my Ipad wasn't recognising images id taken on my camera when I inserted the memory card - I then formatted the card not realising this would delete all the images (AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!) is there any way to get the images back??? x
