just won a CC-52 five disc Cd player on ebay. I thought it was the
same as the single CD-52 which I have .The CC is from Japan and the
CD from Belgium

the CC is a nice bitstream unit BUT-it does not play 80 minute CDr-s
as does the CD

Is this because Marantz hard coded something instead of soft coded it.
Did other companies have this problem?

As a mac programmer, we were always warned to soft code or our
software was guaranteed to break. I followed the rules and no matter
what apple did my software never broke

I guess for 66 bucks shipping included I did not do too bad

BTW when did 80 minute blanks show up

p.s. there is no upgrade available

I've worked on a number of CC-52's though it's been a while. I remember no
such problem with CD-R's. The CC-52 is a Sanyo / Fisher based machine,
unlike most Marantz models, which are Philips based.

Does it play factory - pressed CD's of near - 80 minute length?

If so, then your problem may be more in the nature of typical CD player
deterioration with age, cleaning, maintenance issues, etc.

The burning speed of the cd-burner could be a factor. It may also be
enlightening to play CD's recorded by a different burner.

Yes it does.

Marantz was adamant that it won't play cdr blanks longer than 74
minutes, whan I called

it is a nice sounding unit though.

Yes, they've always said that, but to my knowledge it applied mainly to the
CD-63 series, made by Philips. This was their standard response because they
had lots of complaints on the CD-63 types. I always regarded this as a
cop-out, weasly answer. They took the attitude of "Well, the discs are
out-of-spec, not our problem" even though virtually EVERY OTHER BRAND ever
made going back to the earliest CD players, has no problem with properly
burned CD-R's, provided the player is functioning properly. The Philips and
Marantz models in question were just pickier, that's all. Since your CC-52
is not Philips-based, I would assume that it is capable of normal CD-R
capability (yes, up to 80 minutes) until proven otherwise.

I still think maybe trying CD-R's recorded on another machine or at a lower
burn speed might be interesting.
