I have a Compaq CQ57 and the specs say that it can handle up to 8 GB of memory but when I install 8 GB using two 4 GB memory sticks or one 4 GB stick it will not boot. The two 2 GB memory sticks that are being used in the CQ57 will work in a Dell E6510 that I have. Specs say that the memory should be DDR3 1333MHz which is the same for the Dell E6510. Any advice or solutions are greatly appreciated.

Solution
First and foremost, are you sure that you have a 64bit OS installed? 32 bit OS will only ever read 4gb of ram.

Secondly are you sure you got the right sticks for your laptop.
Your Compaq requires low voltage ddr3 memory that is 1.35v and CL-11

I see 584037-001 after a barcode on the Windows certificate on the back and if I add that after CQ57 and Google that one of the responses is this link https://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-Compaq-Presario-CQ57-Series.68934.0.html which shows a few different CQ57 specs. The only places that I see CQ57 is the lower right corner of the display and in the bios. Computer properties shows 'Presario CQ57 Notebook PC'. I don't know where else to look.
