You'll only know for sure by researching the board's specs. Usually, a compatible board for the same series (even if it's a different sku than the original) will have a very similar configuration, including CPU socket and video card slot, if applicable - but I stress

Then go with a desktop. 

 If you want something small, go with a small form factor. Even with a PGA socket and MXM slot on a laptop board, you're still limited as to what you can swap.
