Laptop screen works when no HDMI cable is hooked up but when HDMI cable is hooked up the monitor works

When the HDMI cable is hooked up to the laptop and monitor the monitor works but when the HDMI cable is not hooked up to laptop, the laptop screen will work. They won’t bot work at the same time. Help!

FN+F4 or maybe F5 - look for a function key with a monitor symbol on it. Press that key combo once and count to about 10.

Also, right-click the desktop, Display Settings, then either extend or mirror the desktop.
