I have a dell laptop that was connected to a sony bravia TV by VGA cable and worked fine. I upgraded the TV to a sony bravia xbr43x800e that only has HDMI. Ive bought 2 different vga to hdmi converters and tried both and I get no signal to the TV. I tried the HDMI cable on something else and it works. I checked the HDMI plug with Blueray and it works. The computer also doesnt see the TV and it isnt listed in the nvidia control panel like it did with the last TV. The computer is set at native 60 hrz, 1920 x 1200. I dont know what else to do and since ive used 2 different model converters Im thinking it isnt a bad converter, any help?

Really, did you even read what I wrote?
Now regarding what converters, i tried a mini-converter and a normal size one both generic, regarding brands. The mini has a USB for power and the other has a dedicated power supply. That's VGA in and HDMI out, pretty simple. I did try reducing the res to 1920x1080 60 hrz to no avail. The main problem i see is that the laptop isnt seeing the TV at all, like it did when the VGA cable was connected directly. Until i can get it to show up I cant configure it in the multiple monitors through Nvidia control panel.

"used converters", when did i ever say they were used? They are new. I have no other tv's and my monitor has a DVI connection, so i have nothing else to attach them to. I got both off ebay and there are a ton of both of these on there and I bought both from sellers with better than 99% feedback.

When you setup a new SONY it updates the firmware.
On the one with the USB i tried both the TV and the Laptop as well as a plug-in power supply, both converters light up when powered.

UPDATE: I hooked up another laptop that had an HDMI port and its screen showed on the TV, so the TV isnt the problem and it again confirmed the HDMI cable works.

Just in case you haven't resolved this problem. I do this with a MacBook Pro, but the process should work the same for you. I actually connected the MacBook to my Sony Bravia via Bluetooth as well, though that shouldn't be necessary. I do have an HDMI cable plugged into an extension on my laptop, then to the Sony. If you have the laptop open, the sound will play from your laptop, that annoys me as the sound is better on my Sony, so the trick is to leave the laptop closed when you begin - I've got a wireless mouse and keyboard to wake the laptop with. Sometimes, still, you need to go into settings on the laptop and select the Sony as the output device.
So, the Sony is smart. But the way I get to the laptop is just using the input on any of my remotes, the Blu Ray player, the Sony remote or even my cable remote. You should see your devices in that list, just pushing input until you get to your laptop should do the trick. I know it sounds simple and it really is, I'd think it would work the same way with a Dell as a MacBook though.

Did you try the hotkey <Fn>+<F8> ?
Did you update your laptop to windows 10? If yes, it might be heplful reinstalling video drivers because Windows 10 installs drivers automatically, which could lead to problems like yours.
Plug in the converter while the laptop is powered off. Power in after you connected the TV.

Solved-
Helpstar Im running winxp on this old laptop but that isnt the problem it was the converters as I supposed. I bought the CE TECH converter off ebay , plugged it in and rebooted my computer. opened Nvidia Control Panel, and under Set Up Multiple Displays i found an option for Viewsonic. When i selected it the TV finally showed the laptop.
Now I had done these same steps with the other converters but they never showed any other options in Multiple Displays. It didnt list my Sony but I guess when you use a converter it shows an entry for the converter. So just as I had initially said , no bad cables and everything was installed correctly and setup properly, thanks for the help everyone but I had to solve it myself, by trying a 3rd converter. I just wonder how they are selling all these other models I tried and they failed, and not getting bad feedback on ebay. I opened a case on each and got my money back.
BTW how do you mark a post SOLVED? It seems dumb that the only Green"Pick as the Solution" buttons are on others posts and not on the original poster.
