larger ROM or larger SD ?

Hi,

i've been thinking about the dell axim 30 with the 624mhz cpu, but now
the axim 50 has arrived and i can buy it with a slower cpu at the same
price.

one thing it has is 256mb ROM instead of 64 of the x30, but then i
should be able to buy the axim 30, and just shove in a larger sd
card... wouldnt I ?

or is it impossible to install software on the sd ? is there a
difference (things u can and cant do) on one but can do on the other ?

thanks

I think it's more like 128M of ROM, a portion of it is used for the OS and
included apps. You do wind up with significantly more Buil-In Storage,
though. With the X30 you get about 30M for your use. There is not that
much difference in what you can install to the BiS or an SD card, you just
get more room and can install more stuff on the X50.

What it allows you to do is keep your SD cards purely for storage, so you
don't haveto worry about what program is on what card if you want to swap
pictures, movies, books, music SD's in at out at will.

With the X50, you could concievably load all the apps that will load into
ROM into ROM, leave the SD slot for just data laden Flash and the CF for
peripherals. For example, I can load a CF camera app into the ROM, have the
camera in the CF slot and store the photos on the SD.

ROM = READ ONLY MEMORY.

How can it wipe if the batteries run low?

Volatile memory like RAM will lose contents if there is no power to it.

Ok, well no iPaqs use ROM any more anyway!
I was using the same terminology as the original poster, you're right it
should be RAM. My iPaq has a store file which is non-volatile. If the
PDA in question has this, then I'd got for it. If however the memory is
part of the system RAM and is volatile then I wouldn't bother, I'd use a
memory card for data or backups.

Do you supposed the larger ROM with the newer screen (*same* resolution
though) and a better battery (1100 instead of 900) of the x50 is worth
the cpu downgrade from x30 624mhz to the x50 400mhz ? (they are of the
same cost...)

i find it had to decide ... hope to get your insight...

thanks

If it was me deciding, I wouldn't be too fussed about CPU speed, 400hmz
is fine unless I intended to do a lot of work with graphics.

define - alot of work ? i do like to view clips and even movies on the
pda ... also - would 400mhz still be strong enough in 3 years ?

(thats the time period i'd like to use this pda...)

My Axim X5 has both CF and SD slots. I keep a 256Mb SD card in there
full time, and have several applications installed on the SD card rather
than in main memory. I just never take the SD card out at all.

I use the CF slot for peripherals like a wireless network adapter or
phone modem. The CF slot also takes a memory card so I usually put
stuff like music files on there to either transfer to the SD card or to
play directly from CF. My digital camera also takes CF cards so I can
use that to preview photos.

Programs installed on SD cards run in ram not the card, the same if they
were installed in ROM, they run in ram. Which is the same as a PC.
If the SD card was true RAM memory my guess it would burn out fast as a
result of the switching it had to do.

Install on the SD card.........but will still run in RAM
