Looking for a DSLR Camera for Christmas.

Hi, i am 14 and a relitavely good photographer and currently have a Sony H400 SLR Bridge Camera. It is very good but not quite getting the quality i would like. i am planning on getting a DSLR camera for my brithday or this christmas. I live in England so has to be avialiable in the UK. Me and my Dad came to an agreement that we would go halves on the camera itself. He also mentioned that i could possibly be able to buy his camera of him (Pentax k30) as he doesnt have enough time to properly use it.

The Canon EOS SL1 is about to be discontinued and replaced with the SL2. there should be great deals on this camera now or soon. The SL1 is very small and has a much better sensor than that sony your coming from. you will loose alot of reach because DSLRs dont really offer 63x zooms. Remember, once you choose a system, your putting a ring on you finger, and a camera system is harder to get rid of than a spouse.

you're not getting the technical quality for doing 24"x36" wall prints?
or the artistic quality that makes the image look "WOW!!" to people who look at it?

identify exactly which quality is missing, so that we can tell you where to spend your money

The Sony H400 only has a 1/2.3" CCD sensor with an f3.4-6.4 lens, so artistic shots using depth of field will be nigh-on impossible, and unless you're working in good light, the technical quality (sharpness, detail, colour, etc.) will also be compromised.

When you buy a dSLR, what you're really doing is buying into a system of lenses, flashguns, etc. If you build up a collection of Nikon equipment, it's very difficult to switch to another brand, so bear that in mind. I believe Canon have the largest selection of lenses.

Rather than buy new, consider buying used and put the money you save towards a lens or two. You can pick up a Nikon D90 or Canon 60D dirt cheap on eBay and cameras such as these will offer more functional features (top LCD, focus motor, etc.). I own a D90 and it performs superbly; brilliant colour balance, fast focusing and solidly built.
