I'm hoping that the forums can help me with this idea I have. I want to have a small notebook designed specifically for watching HD videos by connecting to a TV.
1. What is your budget?
-I'm planning for the future so I'm not sure of my budget as yet but ideally less than $500. The cheaper the better (obviously).
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
-Small would be preferable, maybe a 12" screen or thereabouts. I don't really need it for itself.
3. What screen resolution do you want?
-I'm not sure if screen resolution affects how it would look when connected to a TV. If the laptop's screen resolution will limit the display on the TV, then a high resolution would be ideal.
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
-A portable. I already have a desktop.
5. How much battery life do you need?
-Very little as it will probably be plugged in most of the time.
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
-This one's kind of tricky. I'd like to be able to emulate NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube games on the laptop but I realize that each later generation requires notably more power for the computer. At least I want to be able to emulate SNES (snes9x emulator), and ideally N64 (Project 64 emulator). Getting Gamecube (Dolphin emulator) would be amazing.
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
-Playing videos using VLC through a TV is the ENTIRE point of this notebook.
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
-Not much, maybe 100Gb.
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
-I'd probably buy off Newegg.ca if I can't find the computer in local store.
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
-Since I don't really need it to keep pace with technology I imagine it'll probably be good for what I need for quite a while. Say 5+ years.
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
-Optical drives would be unnecessary as I'd likely be using USB keys for the movies.
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
-I had an Acer in the past and it served me well for 5 years so I like their brand. I don't want a Mac because I hate Apple. Other brands I have no preferences.
13. What country do you live in?
Canada.
14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
The big thing I need from this notebook is the ability to connect an HD quality video cable, like HDMI, to a television for watching programs on VLC or the internet. Everything else is gravy. That being said I'd also like to have 4 USB keys for USB controllers if I do manage to get the emulators working on the notebook.
