Microphone not working on headphones

I recently bought Bose Soundtrue headphones and it comes with an in-line mic. I went to skype my friends and they could not hear me at all. I tried microphone testers and they do not detect any sound either. I have tried many things and I simply cannot get them to work, I have windows 8.1 if that helps. Please, any suggestions would prove most valuble.

You will need an adapter like this to split the audio and microphone inputs in order to use it most likely.
