Wow I must be in the twilight zone then, I am on my 3rd Wii (one overheated and died, on the second one the dvd/game drive died and freezes in the main menu). Strange enough I am still on my 1st 360 that is going to be five years old here in December.

the main reason i bought a PS3 was because of this and that i have no respect for xbox because of the failure rates. everyone of my friends had to replace there 360's. had a buddy last year have his 1 year old xbox 360 fail, had another when i went to visit him just recently had to replace his elite.

With the PS3 and soon the Elite being the same price the 360 fanboys should grow a brain and think about what console to buy when they go to the nearest electronics store or send there 5th failed xbox in for repair.

all the 360 has now is Halo (which is winding down and will be milked more than guitar hero now) and gears of war.

[citation][nom]ossie[/nom]That's what you get, by using SW "development" techniques in the HW world.[/citation]

expect to be doing that many more times because all they send you back is a refurbished console. but from you attitude i know you will still send it in when this one goes on you and will continue doing it almost every 1-2 years.

In response to the guy who talked about the halo edition one, that was my second xbox. My first xbox red ringed on me after a year, then I ditched it two months before Microsoft instituted their mandatory 3 year warranty on red ring of death issues. The fact that I had 30 games or so convinced me to buy another one against my better judgement (stupid, I know) which was the halo edition one. Last Friday, it red ringed on me too. Thankfully, I'd gotten an instant replacement service contract through Fry's and got it replaced, but I hope you have better luck with the halo edition than I did. It lasted less than 2 years and now Microsoft refuses to transfer the licenses to a new system because I didn't wait 2-3 months for a replacement from them instead (i used the license transfer page 7 months ago for the other xbox). As far as the people here not believing the failure rate, I suggest you look at the facts. I have six friends who have xbox 360's. Five of them have xboxs that have red ringed on them. Two of those five have gone through 2 or more xboxs. Everything i've heard here and from other people echoes my experiences. The guy above who was asking why someone would go through six xboxs isn't too smart. The 500 bucks in games he has, the 500 bucks he spent on the original console when it came out, and the 'free' replacement within warranty makes it an obvious choice. Then again, inconveniencing Microsoft is fun too.

I think it's pretty well established that there is a design flaw with the 360, such that it has inadequate cooling. However, knowing that is the case, every 360 owner should install and after-market cooler on his/her 360. I have three 360s (one for each TV) and have coolers on all of them. I've never had a red ring or any other major problem. These coolers sell for between $15 and $20, so there is simply no reason not to have one. Hopefully Microsoft will do better on the Xbox 720.

Hmmm... assuming that the figure's are right, which i know they're probably not but...

Anyway...
Statement 1: "showing that the Xbox 360 having a shocking 54.2 percent rate of failure"

Statement 2: "and the vast majority of Xbox 360 customers have enjoyed a terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day"

They kinda contradict if the "vast majority" has enjoyed the XBox since they bought it, some poor chaps must have had this thing break again and again and again 😛.

[citation][nom]tekeffect[/nom]I don't know a single person with one that hasnt had it replaced[/citation]
Well, now you know me! I've had mine for one and a half year and it's still working. Although I don't game much on consoles, it never crashed on me once. I use it more for streaming videos from my computer and it didn't fail at that either.

Wehn did the survey took place? I know the failure rate was horrible when it came out in 2005, but I know it got better with the latest versions.

Despite the failure rate, you have to at least give it to MS to step up to the plate and fix millions of 360's for free. I have about 10 friends with 360s, and most of them are original units that were sent in for repair, some of them multiple times.. I know 5 people with the PS3, and 2 of them had to send them back in, only Sony charged them each $175 to return a working unit because these repairs weren't covered under the warranty. I only broke down last year and got the new Jasper model when it came out and its been running strong with no issues at all.

My X360 was built on July 2007 and I bought it last year refurbished (from rrod). Since then it's been fine and no problem whatsoever. Why? I only use it up to 2 hours a day and up to 10 hours a week. I give it plenty of room to breathe and I don't treat it like a toy (ie: shake or move it while it's on, poke something into it, abuse it in any way).

still have my first gen 360. never had any problems with it but i will probably upgrade this year to an elite if just for the HDMI and to upgrade the HD from 10gig to 120gig

I think your confusion is predicated on the assumption that those two conditions are mutually exclusive; they're not. Not withstanding the fact that the term "vast majority" is unqualified, a person who purchases an Xbox that subsequently fails does not have their "terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day" suddenly abated. That they need to have their Xbox repaired or replaced does not preclude them from enjoying a similar experience in the future. Just a little FYI into how statistics work.

I can't wait till the EU comes around and demands MS to have a ballot in their warranty to choose and PS3 or Wii as the console given back to the customer.

I have had my 360 since the week it was released and have not had any problems. Especially since they introduced the ability to install games.

Personally i think the failure rate is over rated and has partially to do with user error. (Although the fact that it exists is still MS's fault)

LOL. Glad im a pc gamer.

It's funny how everyone still goes out and buy's these things even when they keep breaking. C'MON, 54% versus 10% for ps3. It's obvious which one is superior. That basically means that if you go out and buy 2 consoles, one is definately gonna break. Where as you have to buy 10 ps3's before one breaks. Just to show the math. Oh, and did anyone read the article? It takes a month to send it in and get it back for repair.

The thing here is, that people are supporting hardware that breaks very frequently. So in the future when they design and build new consoles, say xbox 720, xbox 3, or whatever the next gen may be, then stability and reliability is not gonna be there focal point or top priority because they know now that people in general will still buy a console in record breaking numbers regardless if it is reliable or not. so in 10 years i'm thinking it's possible they are just gonna have disposable consoles. We are 1/2 way to that point now. SAD...🙁

Glad i'm a pc gamer.

tell me about it i have no respect and question a persons intelligence when they keep supporting a peace of expensive electronic equipment like the 360 when it fails on them more than once

i can understand if it is the first time it fails on you, it can be a fluke and would not have to deal with selling all games and peripherals you accumulated with the console over the time time you have it .

BUT the 3rd or 4th time it fails on you?!? seriously even if you can get it replaced for free on warranty is it still worth keeping it around when the warranty has to replace it for you like 2 or 3+ times?

speaking of that i would love to see an average number of xbox 360's people get during the time of there warranty.

I bought two 360's, one launch that I have on my computer monitor for when the wife is watching TV (did indeed RROD), and an arcade unit with HDMI for my TV (I swap the HDD).

For the unit that was repaired it took 10 days from me mailing it off (about 2 days for the box to show up as I live in AK.).

So far I have had my 360 for about 1,365 days. Out of those days I was unable to play it for 12 of them.

To summarize, I have been unable to play my 360 for %.08 of the time. I would rather it not break of course, but this number is not a deal breaker for me as MS did include a 1 month live card and 2 arcade games.

I think if I really get down to it, my PC has caused me %.08 percent greif just upgrading to less than stellar video drivers for ARMA 2.

This is merely a sign of things to come. Zune fails, Vista failed, IE fails, Yahoo deal flops...how will the new stores fare? Failure. Bing vs. Google? LOL. Win7 vs Mac OS? My money is on Apple...the consumer will begin to flock to "those other guys." MS has been an abysmal failure at everything they try to market...like them or not, Apple knows how to market their products. Just look at the current stock prices of each.

Bye-bye Microsoft.
