MSI ghost laptop 2nd hard drive cable question

Hi everyone,

So I bought a new laptop, the MSI gs60 ghost 013, the one with only a 256 ssd. i bought a 2.5 sata sshd because there's an open bay, but when I opened the laptop up I found myself way outta my depth! It was a nightmare to get to the bay, and when I found the hard drive bay, i realized there were no cables anywhere, and I couldn't even figure out where they plugged in to. The only thing I can gather is that there is an open ribbon connection on the hard drive itself.

Do I need to get an sata to ribbon cable? Also, does it need to connect to the psu as well? I'm so used to working with desktops and clearly I'm in a whole different ballgame. I'm halfway to just returning the hard drive and going with an external, but I'd really like to make this work.

MSI tech support was completely useless when I inquired what cable I should order. What do I need?

Most likely, you will need to remove the optical drive and obtain an optical drive bay carriage adapter for the second hard drive. Having watched the full disassembly video on your unit (Could be a slight difference among sub models, but it's unlikely) there does NOT seem to be an additional bay for the installation of a natively secondary drive, so using the optical drive bay if it's equipped with one on your model would be the only option. Optical carriages are generally universal and you would simply use the existing SATA connector as well as the optical drives power connector to utilize the other drive.
