my acer aspire 4720z starts but the screen does not display

Have you tried to plug in an external monitor to the VGA port? When you do, turn the laptop on with the external monitor plugged in, do you get any video signal to the external screen? If so does it take you to the OS?

If successful, then you may have a bad internal screen. If not, your laptop isn't posting.

If not posting, are there any flashing indicator lights around the keyboard or system beeps that will help us narrow down the problem?

The laptop when powered up does not make any noises whatsoever
The lights around the top of the keyboard appear to be flashing and then come to a stop like when the system has booted up and is lying dormant
I've tried plugging in an external monitor and it does come up with the OS desktop page
The laptop screen still does not display
